Fall AGU information

By admin - Posted on 06 January 2015

Dec. 19, 2014: During Fall AGU an informal gathering of SuperDARNers at the Thirsty Bear was attended by Kathryn, Adrian, Colin, Keisuke, Simon, Jo, Evan, Ashton, Angeline, Glenn, and Mike (scribe). George and Lindsay have been sighted. Items reviewed (in no particular order):
- Halley back on the air
- Buckland Park now streaming data to the SD distribution
- Hokkaido West also streaming data
- New UK radar going to south of France, 4th MSI build possibly to Ireland, discern that two tiers of midlatitude radars are emerging, arrayed at 50 and 40 mlat respectively.
- Uncertain extent of Russian participation in SuperDARN, coverage in Russian sector raised by HSO planners at min-GEM workshop on Sunday
- Development of an MLT module to accompany the AACGM-v2 developed by Simon, connection to Kile, Simon Wing, Haje, and APL, release to the community
- How to adapt to the new AACGM, starting point will be for VT to re-post Table of radar coordinates with time-stamping and demonstrations of variance from old AACGM and secular variation
- Inform that Simon has posted a calculator for finding AACGM-v2 coordinates (contrast with that for old AACGM at CCMC): http://sdnet.thayer.dartmouth.edu/aacgm/aacgm_calc.php
- Discussions with Colin about a more rigorous way to map from geo to AACGM coordinates (to bundle with transition to new AACGM?)
- Concerns about non-SDers making dubious use of data and plots, maintaining quality-control
- Concerns about maintaining software, availability of RST3.5, etc., VT will circulate status report in January to the PIs
- Discussion by software developers (Ashton, Angeline,...) at other end of table, inaudible to the scribe, expect a status report from this side as well with Nathaniel's return to VT in January
- General idea is to lay out several items early in the new year for prompt attention and then resolution at the Leicester Workshop
- Colin reported that the Leicester web page for the Workshop is up, seems that this hasn't been announced
